Recognition of butterflies<\/a><\/p>\n

In the above page your photograph can be recognized by a system designed to compare photos with AI (=Artificial Intelligence). My personal data base of photographs had been used for this task.<\/p>\n

Accuracy can be improved further by adding to “Photo contribution to Greek Butterfly Recognizer” more correctly identified photos of the users. Users of this page are invited to upload their photos for recognition and send their photos to contribute, because if more photographs are stored, more accurate recognition in predicted.

The results for some of the 236 species of butterflies of Greece are presented grouped in (complexes)<\/a>:<\/p>\n

    The reasons for this is that there are limits in identification with photos only in this AI (=Artificial Intelligence); Identification of the above species could be improved only after a discovery of new crucial characters on the wings and new tools of the AI.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It is recommended that users, before resorting to the Application, first search for the answer in their books, on various websites, etc., and then resort to the Application to confirm their conclusion. The research in the field, the suffering of the effort with perseverance and patience, the contact with the relevant books is the sure but uphill way, to improve one in the recognition of the butterflies. Quick Recognition with Application is good but don’t blindly trust it and always doubt the recognitions.<\/p>\n

    Don’t forget: keep a clear mind and remember not to believe a thing (Epicharmus fr. 250, 540-450 BC).<\/p>\n

    The name proposal is accompanied by a percentage (%). Let the user keep in mind that:<\/p>\n

    1. If the percentage is too low (eg below 50%) there is a lot of uncertainty and the identification is most likely incorrect.
    \n2. If the percentage is high (eg over 90%) there is relative certainty about recognition.
    \n3. If the percentage is intermediate (eg from 50- 90%) then it is suggested to the user that he finally decide on the name.
    \n4. The identification system suggests a name, but can not explain why and of course does not indicate the characteristic details in the external features, which are useful in identification.
    \n5. These limits, ie the possibility of accurate recognition from photographs and through the current Artificial Intelligence system, are underlined by the creation, for the needs of this application, of 14 complexes. Now 203 of the 236 species are identified with relative certainty at the species level while the remaining 33 are recognized not at the species level but as belonging to one of the 14 complexes.
    \n6. Improvement in this current recognition capability can be done by \u201ctraining\u201d the application with more and more accurately recognized photos and inventing new Artificial Intelligence tools.
