Η παρουσίαση του θέματος του βιβλίου απαιτεί την χρήση επιστημονικής ορολογίας, γιά την ακριβή περιγραφή των ειδών. Επειδή όμως κρίθηκε σκόπιμη η διευκόλυνση του αναγνωστικού κοινού, έτσι ώστε να γίνει κτήμα και των μη ειδικών, επιλέχθηκε η μερική χρήση κοινών ονομασιών. Έτσι π.χ. χρησιμοποιήθηκε η λέξη κάμπια αντί “κάμπη”, φτερό αντί “πτέρυξ”, κατοικία αντί “ενδιαίτημα” κλπ.
Αντίθετα διατηρήθηκε κατά περίπτωση η επιστημονική ορολογία π.χ. προσακτρίδα, androconia, όλα τα ονόματα των οικογενειών, των γενών και των υποειδών κλπ., επειδή δεν υπάρχουν δόκιμοι κοινοί όροι στην Ελληνική γλώσσα, αντίθετα με ότι συμβαίνει στην Αγγλική, που διαθέτει κοινά ονόματα γιά όλες τις πεταλούδες όπως π.χ. Swallotail γιά την Papilio machaon, Scarce swallotail for Iphiclides podalirius etc.
