Characteristic details of species Erebia euryale, Erebia ligea and Erebia aethiops

These species are quite similar, but it is possible to separate them based on the external characteristics, if they are marked, as described below in comments: (Comment 1) In the species Erebia ligea and Erebia euryale the fringes of the wings have a clear white color (in the spaces S) and light brown (in the veins V, marking with a green dotted line). (Comment 2) In the species Erebia aethiops the fringes of the wings are light gray, white (in the spaces S) and light brown gray (in the veins V, marking with a green dotted line).

(Comment 3) In old individuals, however, this feature (that is the fringes) is not always clear; the UPS of the wings are very similar, and their separation is quite difficult when only the UPS is visible; the separation of males is facilitated by androconia, the location of which (when present) is marked with a yellow dotted line in the photos. (Comment 4) In Erebia aethiops the androconia are extensive. (Comment 5) In Erebia ligea there are androconia, but on a smaller surface of the UPF. (Comment 6) In Erebia euryale androconia are absent.

(Comment 7) The UNS of the wings are always different.
